Environmental benefits / Climate change from electricity

Back to Environmental benefits

Continued growth in carbon emissions is the greatest threat facing the planet.

Today in the US over 70% of electricity is supplied by burning fossil fuels. Consuming all our electricity from the grid means emitting large volumes of carbon into the atmosphere.

The effects of global warming are real and have been well documented and include the following problems:

  • increased airborne diseases and hundreds of millions of associated deaths
  • increased sea levels, the death of coral reefs, and massive coastal erosion
  • increased ferocity and frequency of extreme weather events, like Hurricane Katrina
  • the extinction of over 25% of all living species in the next 40 years

We don't need to go further here, but needless to say, our children's world is going to look very different if we don't act soon to implement solutions to climate change. For an excellent summary, go rent Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth.

The good news is that some innovative solutions, like solar power, are readily available and cost-effective. Solar systems generate electricity directly from the sun, with no fuel, no noise, and no emissions.

If installations of global solar electric systems grow 700 times by the middle of the century, we will have stopped about 15% of the carbon pollution (that would have otherwise been produced over this time) and averted drastic climate change.

Sungevity's mission is to facilitate the growth of solar, starting with you and your home. Enter your address above and let us design a solar solution for your home, showing you how much carbon you can save. Make a difference now, and call us if you have any questions!
