Now, you can help light their world from the outside. For Sungevity, solar power has become the way of our future. For children in Zambia, solar power can help them build their future. That’s why Sungevity has partnered with Empowered by Light. In a part of the country with almost no electricity resources and a dependency on toxic kerosene lights, solar power offers a healthy way to light up a child’s world. For a child’s education, giving them light is the difference between learning and not learning. That’s why for every solar system we sell, we give a solar powered light kit to the children of Zambia.
Empowered by Light (EBL) is a non-profit organization founded with a mission to improve lives through the use of renewable energy technologies. Solar: ZAMBIA is its first project with the goal of delivering 5,000 solar-powered LED light/cell phone charge kits to rural Zambian schools who do not have electric power. By empowering communities with solar lighting kits they are able to extend the hours available for study while improving indoor air quality and saving the community money.
Through a partnership with Lemnis lighting, Empowered by Light has secured a stand alone remote solar lighting solution at below market costs. The product is a compact solution in a re-usable package containing a triple LED lamp, a solar panel and a built-in USB connection to charge mobile devices. Apart from solar energy, a regular electrical grid connection can also be used to charge the battery.
Zambia (pronounced zæmbiə), is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. The neighbouring countries are the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the north-east, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. The capital city is Lusaka, located in the south-central part of the country and the population is concentrated mainly around the capital as well as the Copperbelt to the northwest.
Our solar light distribution program focuses on remote rural regions in Western Zambia that don’t yet have an existing solar lighting market. In these regions kerosene lamps are the primary source of lighting and pose a significant health risk due to the toxic vapors they produce. In June of 2011 Empowered by Light distributed its first set of lights to all 53 schools in the Shangombo District of Western Zambia.

Sungevity has a Vision: Solar For Universal Need or SFUN. This means affordable solar for everyone on the planet. Solar for All, It’s as simple as that. We want everyone to feel good about the energy they use, regardless of where on earth they are located. The power of the sun can power us all.
The Every Child Has a Light program was founded in commitment to our vision, as a partnership between Sungevity and Empowered by Light. Sungevity has pledged to send a solar lighting kit to Zambia for every sale we make. Through the Every Child Has a Light program, Sungevity hopes to continue growing the Sunshine Network and helping each customer take part in lighting the way for a cleaner, brighter world.
Empowered by Light (EBL), based in San Francisco, has a mission to improve lives and the environment by encouraging the use of renewable energy. Their first effort is to help children, schools and clinics in Zambia by powering their lives with sunshine through distribution of a compact solar kit. This kit will provide light, as well as charge cell phones, helping to diminish the usage of toxic kerosene. Go solar locally; give solar globally, and brighten the future of a child.
Inspired by an article in the NewYork times, The founders of Empowered by Light (EBL) became determined to apply his knowledge, experience, and connections to help alleviate poverty throughout Zambia. They quickly assembled a team of accomplished professionals to raise the funds needed to launch the organization and initiate a pilot lighting distribution effort during the summer of 2011. During the distribution EBL developed a partnership with the Zambezi Environmental Education Camp (ZEEC) to assist in the selection of the recipient schools and distribution logistics. ZEEC is a member of the Wildlife and Conservation Society of Zambia, and is registered as a non-profit NGO. It is supported by the Watoto Charitable Trust.
The Every Child Has a Light partnership between Sungevity and EBL represents the next step in the evolution of the organization as we set a goal of contributing 2,000 solar lighting kits to the education efforts of over 50 schools in rural Zambia. These schools are forced to shut their doors after dusk and don’t have the resources to purchase lighting, so by giving the school the gift of solar, each Sungevity customer is contributing to the education of Zambia’s youth.

The lamp has 3 light levels. On the highest level a complete room of around 10 square meters can be lit up
Depending on the chosen light level the Pharox Solar Kit delivers 8 to 45 hours of light when the battery inside is fully charged
The lamp has 5.5mm DC input for exernal power supply (7-9 V, max 200 mA)
The battery is easy to replace
Indicators show the battery level and whether it is charging
The packaging is robust and re-usable. It avoids possible damage during transport or influences from exposure to water and dust.
